“Smokescreen is about a coping mechanism for anxiety, not one I prescribe to myself, but something Michael Stipe said to Thom York’s, and so I wrote the lyrics around that. It then becomes quite obviously about a character who suffers from anxiety et al, and “I’m not really here” is the coping mechanism that the character is using to protect themselves from everything, And it becomes quite an interesting read once you bear that in mind.” - Billy Jones (primary songwriter)
